October 3, 2005 - Carley Corporation’s Training Products Support Army’s Installation of Secure Communication Radios in Iraq
When the Army’s Stryker Brigade Combat Team Three (SBCT3) patrols in Iraq this fall, they ' ll benefit from the improved communication capabilities of new Secure Wireless Local Area Network (SWLAN) radios. And they’ll be prepared to use them because of the training program Carley developed to support the implementation.
An alternative to secure communication through cable connections, the latest version of the radios (SWLAN AN/VRC-106) was installed in the Stryker Brigade vehicles in late August 2005. The combat unit moved to Iraq shortly afterwards. This is the first operational deployment of the upgraded radio units, which combine commercial equipment and encryption capabilities in a communication system mounted on battlefield command vehicles to provide essential Secure Command and Control. The SWLAN equipment provides a wireless Ethernet classified communications capability between the Tactical Operations Center (TOC) vehicles.
A number of contributors created the SWLAN system under the leadership of the Army’s Program Manager, Tactical Radio Communications Systems (PM-TRCS), including Northrop Grumman Mission Systems, General Dynamics C4 Systems, and Northrop Grumman Information Technology. Carley Corporation created all of the training materials associated with the equipment for system administrators, maintenance personnel, and general purpose users.
Operational since 2004, the entire population of SWLAN radios recently underwent a hardware, software and security modification and upgrade program. Carley provided revised Instructor-Led Training and Interactive Computer-Based Training to support these upgrades.
The reinstallation of radios in SBCT3 is the first operational deployment of the improved units. The radios were shipped to SBCT3 in Kuwait in August, where a team of five Northrop Grumman personnel coordinated and installed the equipment. The operators and maintainers then participated in the Instructor-Led Training in Iraq to learn about the revised radio units. Since then, the SWLAN radios have been an integral part of the SBCT3 TOC networks and continue in operation in the demanding Iraq theater. SBCT4 is currently being equipped with the SWLAN system with additional combat units scheduled.
